Residence Visa
The D1 Visa is a residence visa for employees of a Portugal based entity, which will be converted into a temporary residence permit in Portugal. Holders of a residence permit are entitled to:
- Enter and stay in Portugal and travel within the Schengen area without the need for a visa for a period of 90 days.
- Family reunification, allowing the applicant’s next of kin to benefit from the same advantages as granted to him/her.
- Access a permanent residence permit in Portugal at the end of five (5) years or
- Apply for Portuguese citizenship at the end of five (5) years.

The D1 visa allows holders to reside and work in Portugal under an employment contract with a Portuguese employer.

With a residence permit, you can stay in Portugal and travel within the Schengen Area visa‑free for up to 90 days.

The visa supports family inclusion, allowing your immediate family members to access the same residency privileges.

Pathway to Long‑Term Residency and Citizenship
After five years of legal residence, you can apply for permanent residency and potentially Portuguese citizenship.
Process
The residence visa must be applied for at the Portuguese Consulate of the country of residence or nationality and is issued, on average, in 2-3 months. At the time of issuing the visa, the Consulate informs about the date of the appointment with AIMA (Immigration and Borders Service) in Portugal to obtain the residence permit. The visa entitles you to 2 entries in Portugal and is valid for 120 days, during which
time you must relocate to Portugal.
On the date of the appointment with AIMA to obtain the residence permit in Portugal, your biometric data (photograph, fingerprints and signature) will be collected.
1-3 months after the appointment, the residence card will be sent to your address in Portugal.
Requirements: The D1 visa application requires, among other, the following crucial document:
a) Employment contract (or promissory employment contract) .
Applicant must have a signed employment contract or binding job offer from a Portuguese employer before starting their D1 visa application.
